ಇವಿಎಂ 'ಕಂಟ್ರೋಲ್‌ ಯೂನಿಟ್‌' ಮತ್ತು 'ಬ್ಯಾಲೆಟ್‌ ಯೂನಿಟ್‌' ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು 5 ಮೀಟರ್‌ ಕೇಬಲ್‌ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬ್ಯಾಲೆಟ್‌ ಯೂನಿಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮತಪತ್ರ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮತದಾರ ತನ್ನ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಯ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಎದುರು ಇರುವ ಗುಂಡಿಯನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಬೇಕು. ಈ ಯಂತ್ರವನ್ನು ರಟ್ಟುಗಳ ಚೌಕಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿರಿಸಲಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಂಟ್ರೋಲ್‌ ಯೂನಿಟ್‌ ಮತಗಟ್ಟೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಯ ಬಳಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ನಿಯಂತ್ರಣ ಘಟಕವನ್ನು ಇವಿಎಂನ 'ಮಿದುಳು' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಮತದಾನ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ 'ಬ್ಯಾಲೆಟ್‌' ಬಟನ್‌ ಒತ್ತಿದ ನಂತರವೇ ಬ್ಯಾಲೆಟ್‌ ಯೂನಿಟ್‌ ಅನ್ನು ಆನ್‌ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಮತ ಚಲಾಯಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ
